Hiding From The Camera Is Costing You Clients

Claudia Comtois Season 3 Episode 20

In this episode of Business Energetics, I’m calling you out (in the most loving way possible). 💛 If you’ve been avoiding the camera, hiding behind Canva posts, or telling yourself you’re “just not ready,” this one’s for you.

I get it. Showing up on video can feel uncomfortable, awkward, and downright terrifying. But here’s the truth: hiding from the camera is costing you visibility, credibility, and actual paying clients.

In this conversation, I’m breaking down the real reasons why you’re not showing up, how it’s affecting your business growth, and what to do to finally overcome that fear.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why showing your face is the #1 visibility hack of 2025
  • The mindset traps keeping you stuck in the shadows
  • How to create trust and connection faster with video

Whether you're a coach, a consultant, or a content creator and if you're serious about growing your brand and making more sales, it’s time to step out of hiding.

🎧 Let’s talk visibility, energy, and being seen, because your clients can’t find you if you’re hiding.

Speaker 1:

All right, today's episode is about why hiding from the camera is actually costing you clients, and if you clicked on this, it's because you're ready for the heat. I am here with you. Okay, I've been showing myself up online for over 10 years now, but I still remember how it was when I first got started. It is intimidating. It's kind of like a weird stage fright that we experience or it's a uncomfortability that we don't want to surmount because it feels like we can go without for a little bit and that's totally fine. A lot of businesses they use somebody from their team to show up online and to kind of be the face and the voice of the company. But if you're a business owner and you have a limited team, or you are starting to negotiate contracts with VCs or you're negotiating, maybe, some PR, tv appearances and things like that, you may want to highly consider using yourself or your co-CEOs to actually show up and be the face of the company. Why? It comes down to the core principles, which is we want to do business with people we know, like and trust, and there is no affiliation or personal link to a business unless you're like, for example, lush, that is, an advocate for animal rights and a bunch of other causes like the, what they did recently, which is they closed down all their stores for an entire day, making them get a 350,000 dollars in loss, just to showcase their engagement towards Palestine. So this is a brand that people can get behind and I don't know about you, but I have no idea who the founder or the CEO is of this company. But if you're, you're building a business right now that hasn't been in business for the past 10, 20 years or doesn't have the visibility that, for example, lush has.

Speaker 1:

It is a foolproof method to use someone from your team or yourself to get in front of the camera to kind of humanize your brand, and that can build the trust very, very fast with consumers when they feel like there is actually a human being running this and making decisions and listening to their consumers. Especially if you're doing b2c, this is soon becoming the norm. So we saw these, these um, these ways of doing business when we first looked at apple and amazon and all the things, but I want you to bring. I want to bring you to today's um, today's business world, which is, for example, if you look at athletic wear, if you're looking at alpha elite, you can know that it's Christian Guzman that's behind that. You have Buffbunny, which is Heidi Summers. You have Warner Active, with their CEO, chris Cisela, which is just doing an amazing job online. I'm going to give you another example Oddmuse, which last year, they have generated over 22.5 million pounds. This is a brand that was launched in 2020 by their CEO.

Speaker 1:

I believe her name was Amy. So Amy built her brand and her personal brand at the same time, using the power of TikTok and social media during the years of 2020 and everything that went on, and because of that and showcasing her journey as the entrepreneur behind the brand, she was able to scale very quickly and build a connection with her audience, who wanted to see her thrive and win and was buying because they feel like they cared about her and her brand. Win and was buying because they feel like they cared about her and her brand. So you can scale much faster when you put a face behind your brand. If you're in the manifestation world, you may know of melanie ann layer, who for years was acting as a secret coach. She was called the invisible coach and she didn't want to show up before the camera online so she would give one-on-one consultations and coaching services behind the scenes, like she wasn't even online, didn't have a website or anything, and she was working solely on referrals. Well, in the past five years of her actually showing up online and when I'm saying showing up, I mean she was going live daily at one point and then weekly, and she kept showing up consistently she has built a $100 million brand with a fairly small team. She scaled very, very fast, especially knowing where in what region of Quebec, canada, she lives in. It is a small section of the world, and so she was able to do it without buying all these offices or going through like the original quote-unquote entrepreneur way that we do in Canada, and so it's very, very impressive.

Speaker 1:

When you start to put yourself behind your brand now, it can also have the reverse effect if you don't have a likable personality. I mean, let's be honest, let's look at what happened to American Apparel, where the CEO went completely berserk and I believe he stepped outside, read outside naked or something, cursing the world in the streets, and then that went viral. But they built their entire brand on doing odd stuff like this. So it could have been used for another expansion of the brand, but this is really where, um, if I remember correctly, there was a line in the sand of okay, this brand is going down, the ceo has gone crazy and we don't think there's a coming back from there. So there is a good side, majoritarily, and there is also a be careful side to not let your emotions overtake your personal brand, and then that being a reflection of the stability of your brand. So, but coming back to our main point, the reason why we feel like we don't want to show up online is either the fear of success or the fear of being judged.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you're an entrepreneur right now I'm gonna shut this down for you you will be judged. Whether you do it or not, you will be judged. If you do it right, you will be judged. If you do it wrong, you will be judged. You have decided to take a path that is unforeseen. You have decided to go to the path that's less traveled. You're already an odd person. You're already not a sheep, you are an outsider. You are this strange alien-esque persona that doesn't believe in having a job and a stable future. You decided to take the other path, so embrace it.

Speaker 1:

Okay, let's just like take a second, right here, right now, to ground ourselves and embrace the fact that you are abnormal and that we are this rare species of people that decided to go against the grain. I mean, if you think about it, you are groomed through television, through your family, through culture, through your environment, through TV, through the news, through every single aspect of your life has been carved so that you go to school, you graduate and you get a high paying job or a good paying job, you get your pension and you retire at 65. This is what we have been taught our entire lives. And then, for some weird reason, on a Tuesday morning, somebody pissed you off at your old job and I'm talking about myself and you just decided enough is enough f this. I'm going my own way and I'm doing my own thing and I believe in this thing that I cannot touch, feel or taste so much that I'm willing to burn everything that I have going on right now, to take a leap of fate and to trust that life will catch me.

Speaker 1:

And sometimes we hit a few branches going. But then we get back up and you know what they say. You know you are crazy until it works. And then everybody asks you like what know? You are crazy until it works. And then everybody asks you like what kind of genius are you? Like, how did you think of all this stuff? So if you were crazy and wild and free enough to do that I mean, getting behind a cell phone is nothing at this point You've done the hard work, like patch yourself in the back, like you've got it, you've done the work. You're good.

Speaker 1:

So, knowing that, moving on to, how do we even get started tackling this thing? Because the more you look at it and the bigger it gets. It's kind of like this mountain perspective of it's a small thing, but the more you look at it and the more you look at angles of it, it becomes bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger in your perspective. And I know this because every single time that I personally stop making content, it always feels like a chore. I'll give you an example I'm not even behind a camera right now because I choose to use this audio, this audio platform, but I haven't posted in months, and the reason why is because I wanted to have the perfect setup with the perfect lighting, and I wanted to use the video and the audio so that I could make YouTube videos out of my videos and then audio would go to podcasts and then I would cut clips out of it and that would become like my content on social media. And this morning I woke up and I said F this, f this. Why? Because I made it bigger than it needs to be, and if I wouldn't have made that decision right now, this episode wouldn't be out, because I would still be trying to figure out what the perfect like background decor would be.

Speaker 1:

And there is one thing that I learned on my perfectionistic journey and by coaching people that are way further than me in life. I'm talking about. I'm coaching people that are way further than me in life. I'm talking about. I'm coaching people that are multi, multimillionaires, okay, and I'm not there yet. I'm getting there, I'm going to get there and surmount this, but at the time that I was coaching these people. I was not a multimillionaire and for some reason they came to me, and that is because and that you have the same thing inside of you. You have, you and I. We have amazing qualities, amazing perspectives, amazing ways of doing things, and this is a skill that is seeked from our clients.

Speaker 1:

And if you hide behind your computer, hide behind your work, and you don't get out there and tell the world, hey, I'm the person you're looking for. You don't put yourself on that stage, ok, look at it like when you put yourself in front of a camera, you are actually getting a higher perspective so that more people can see you. It's kind of like everybody's living in the city, everybody's at the same level, and there's building hiding you. And then you decide I'm going to get on top of that building and I'm going to shout and the people are going to look at me and some people are going to love what I'm saying and some people are going to hate what I'm saying, and some people are going to keep walking wherever they were walking, but some people will stay and some people will want to get a chair, listen to me, or buy whatever I'm selling from the rooftop. This is what you're doing by putting yourself in front of the camera or behind a mic OK, when I'm talking about the camera, I mean any module that will be able to expand your voice and image and and visibility. You are deciding to put yourself at a vantage point where people more people that are aligned with your message and your offering are able to see, feel and and like what they're seeing and enter your world and spend with you.

Speaker 1:

But if you stay behind behind a wall, behind a website, behind a storefront, you are limiting your access to helping more people, and that is a shame, because I can think of so many people that on my personal journey they were there and these people, I would look at them on Facebook live videos when it was popping off. They were talking about making 10K a month and back then I wasn't even making like maybe 2K a month and I was like wow, but not with my business, with my job, like my business was barely maybe 2k a month. And I was like wow, but not with my business, with my job, like my business was barely making a hundred dollars a month. And I was like wow, they're talking about 10k a month. And I remember I would spend hours and hours listening to them, getting into their freebies, getting into their communities, getting to their world, buying their courses, buying their coaching because some somehow watching them and experiencing them doing that gave me permission to do it for myself. Now I have surpassed these numbers and knock on wood like thank God, I am so grateful, but it was because I saw people put themselves out there and that gave me permission to have access to that reality. And that is also why sometimes I will post my wins. Sometimes, like a lot of times, I will post my wins on Instagram and on TikTok and Facebook and stuff like that, and sometimes I still feel like a little bit of a cringe doing that, like ew, like am I actually bragging? But then I remember the Claudia years ago that was looking for permission to be the version that she is today and I remember looking at these people and then that gives me permission to share these wins. Because what if, what if? Somebody is living their life right now and they're scrolling by and they're either listening to this podcast or listening to one of my videos or coming across one of my freebies or courses and they're like this, give them permission to actually follow their dreams and ask for more demand, more out of life. This gave them permission, that one single piece of content, what I showed my face, shared my voice or just made a video, and that actually happened.

Speaker 1:

I want to talk about the story of one of my amazing clients, and she was a stay-at-home mom. She went out of a, you know, a single mom. She was out of a relationship with somebody. I don't know the details, but she was raising her child alone and when she first came into my courses and my universe, she started by seeing videos and I was probably referred by somebody else that did my, my trainings and then shared it with her and she entered my world and I see her. She's still liking my things, we have conversations and I still cheer her on on her journey.

Speaker 1:

And this woman came in. She was trying to get more out of life. She came from a cultural background where it was a very strict world, a very strict way of being raised, and now she was a single mom and she had to fend for herself in a world of judgment and I saw this woman bloom in front of my eyes. For the eight months that we worked together, this woman went from being a single stay-at-home mom working a phone job with people who had no respect for her or her family because they would. They would shame her for working from home when her child was at home. It was disgusting. They would give her impossible hours, low pay, just really bad, bad, bad circumstances. And she was dreaming of traveling. She was dreaming of having a better life and she implemented what she learned into our certification. She was able to get her first deals, get inquiries for her other business, and I remember coming across one of her first travels with her child and I see her on the beach with a drink and I'm like you did this, you did this, you did this and I have chills. The happiness of being somebody that's part of someone else's story, regardless of if she's going to continue on in my world or not. Just knowing that I was that stepping stone and my courses were that, you know, ignition for all of the greatness that was already inside of her but just needed to have some way of being expressed, was so rewarding for someone else.

Speaker 1:

I don't care if you're selling products. If you're selling, maybe you're selling active wear, maybe you're selling oils, maybe you are in the insurance world, maybe you're a real estate agent and you feel like you know I'm just a transaction. No, you're not. Maybe you're helping someone finding their dream home where they're going to raise their family, raise their children. Maybe you are a coach and you're going to say one thing that's going to help your clients strive and believe in themselves and now they're going to go ahead and build a legacy for their family Generations to come. You have that inside of you.

Speaker 1:
